My heart goes out to Helen, Randy, Daniel and Ricki. Sam was a major influence in my life when we moved to Morton Grove/Niles in 1998. I know Sam from baseball, the law and the school board. 2 things about Sam stand out to me. First, his devotion and love of his children. There is nothing Sam wouldn’t do to support his kids. Second, that Sam helped so many people in so many ways He truly lived by the principal of Tikkun Olam. I am but one of many that will miss Sam and will think back fondly of all our interactions over the years.

A good friend of mine died this week, and I was reading her obituary in the Chicago Tribune. It was then I noticed “Sam Borek.” All of a sudden, I could see the dear face of a boy I taught at Von Steuben High School, almost 50 years ago. I don’t know if this was your dear Sam, but I am taking a chance that it is. Sam was the kindest, sweetest boy. He was in my public speaking class, and gave his demonstration speech on “How To Core a Lettuce.” Can you imagine? I remember that he said his dad was in the produce business, and he proceeded to show us how to core a lettuce without a knife! It was a great speech, and I hope I gave him an “A.” The fact is that I never really caught on to the trick of it, and through the years, I have demolished many a head of lettuce trying to emulate Sam. I do believe he just wacked it on the edge of the counter, VOILA! Not so for the rest of us. I will be thinking of you, and your children. I can still see his shining face.

To the family of Sam –
So saddened to hear of your loss. Sam was such a unique man.
With a sharp, inquisitive mind, he came across as a straight talker who didn’t mince words. Once you got to know him, however, you realized he had a heart of gold. He was always a tremendous friend to my father, Errol. And when I was a bit aimless in my early 20s, he gave me a job and a loving push in the right direction.
There is and will never be anyone like Sam.
Sending thoughts and prayers your way.
Uzi.

2 things I will always remember about Sam. In no particular order, first, how many good things he did for so many people. And second, how nothing was more important than supporting his children every way a father could. He was a good man who fought for what he cared about. He definitely made his mark. Leon

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Sam’s passing. While I had only recently met him I found him to be a man of great warmth and honor. My heart goes out to his friends and especially to his family. Sam, you will be missed!
