Obituary for Reada Turry Sabes
The late Reada Turry Sabes, wife of Franklin Sabes, was only 64 years only when she passed away on January 26, 2015. Auntie Reada, as she was known to her many nieces and nephews, will be remembered as the “pie lady” by everyone who had the pleasure of tasting one of her desserts. Sister of Brian (Wendy) Turry and Jerry (Nancy) Turry, sister in law of Earl (Barbara) Sabes and former sister in law of Lynne Turry, Reada was aunt and great aunt to two generations. Jeff, Philip “Flip,” Ben, Rachel, Adam, Allison, Karen, Jenny and their spouses and children will miss their beloved aunt.
A graduate of Niles West High School and Roosevelt University, Reada was a longtime employee of Arthur Andersen in Chicago. Reada loved her job at Andersen, commuting downtown and living in Lincoln Park. After her tenure at Andersen ended, Reada went on to work for a Jewish Day school in the administrative offices.
Not having children, Reada’s nieces and nephews were her pride and joy. Often being referred to as the “favorite aunt” because of the silly and thoughtful gifts given at holidays and birthdays, nieces and nephews also were guests for at least annual sleepovers that included visits to such wonderful “city” locations as Century Shopping Center, East Bank Club, and RJ Grunts. Funny socks, wish list toys such as the Barbie Dream House, roller skates and fabulous hats and scarves were among the wonderful gifts that left an impression on her family.
When she wasn’t at work or with her family, Reada spent her time championing animals big and small. For many years, she was a docent at Lincoln Park Zoo where she led tours to children and families teaching them about the various animals they met. Reada enjoyed her time at the zoo and often shared funny stories of what the monkeys were up to on her last visit. She was a dog lover; always enjoying visits with the many dogs in her extended family included the infamous Emily the setter, Taffy the escape artist, Ruggles the collie, Jake the lab, and Ellie the Chesapeake. She loved her four-legged family members as much as the two leggeds!
Reada is preceded in death by her parents, Merriann “Mickey” and Phillip Turry. Her mother was ever her champion.
A frequent guest at family events where she was asked to bring a dessert, Reada developed her reputation as “the pie lady!” A story told by her nephew, Ben, “There is a woman in Puerto Vallarta that sells amazing pies at the farmers market. My father, Jerry, teases the women every Saturday that he would fly his sister down to compete against her.” Thanksgiving dinner was not complete without an apple pie, pumpkin pie, and cheesecake from Auntie Reada. Her niece, Rachel, will proudly carry on her baking tradition.
During Thanksgiving 2014, Reada presided over a Monopoly tournament played by her niece, nephew and sisters-in-law. She kept everyone honest and made sure a good time was had by all…and that her sleeping husband and brother were not disturbed in the background.
For so many reasons, Auntie Reada will be missed. Zichrono livracha. May her memory be for a blessing.
