(Marshall Watanabe, another past employee of Terry’s, notified me.)
Terry Johnson was my first boss at CNA, after I completed CNA’s computer programmer trainee class in 1976. I was very lucky to be in Terry’s group at CNA because I learned from others that Terry’s group had the best controls and was the best run of any other computer programming group at CNA. The procedures we followed, working for Terry, were the best in the business and it was due to Terry’s leadership. Terry was very low key, yet the experience I received working for him and within his group prepared me with a an excellent and solid background for the rest of my career at CNA and at other places. Terry was by far the best boss I ever had. He took good care of us employees. (Under Terry, I worked for Bill Koh, and later Bill Klusken). I remember that after writing and testing the “Post Masters” system (or was it Mailhandlers? I forget which it was now), CNA lost the contract because CNA’s agent missed the bidding meeting and another company got the contract. It was the first complete system I had ever written and tested. Terry talked to me and he didn’t want me to feel discouraged that my first system and the system I had worked-on so hard wouldn’t be used. But, I assured Terry that as long as I didn’t have to repay my salary for the time I worked on it, it would be okay with me. I also remember that one time when I had a problem with my paycheck, Terry gave me some gentle advice before I went-down to Payroll about it. Terry told me not to tell them what caused the problem and how to fix it, but rather to listen and let them explain it to me. That was good advice that I followed then and have tried to follow ever since. Terry was a good boss and a good person, well liked and respected by many. I am a better person, in many ways, for having worked for Terry. I am sorry for your loss.
