Obituary

Andrea was born in Chicago, IL. As a young girl moved to Evanston. Even by living there she started showing her passion for teaching. She had her neighborhood friends gather at her house, where she taught them at her “school”. The family with her two brothers, Randy and Andrew then moved to Skokie. There she attended Old Orchard Junior High followed by Niles Township High School. Later the family moved to Phoenix, AZ, where Andrea completed high school and then attended Arizona State and the University of Arizona where she received her teaching degree. Shortly after graduating she returned to Chicago to stay with relatives and friends while pursuing her career in education. Her first teaching job was in Chicago Public Schools, followed by Roosevelt School in Maywood, IL. During this time she lived in Rogers Park. Then while attending a lecture in art in Evanston with a friend, Andrea met her future husband Richard Ghetzler, an aerospace engineer. They fell in love and married within 6 months, also in Evanston. Andrea and Richard had their first child Marissa while they lived in their first home in Buffalo Grove. Prior to Marissa’s birth Andrea took a 12 years break from teaching to raise Marissa and her brother Brandon who was born 6 years later. Since 1995 Andrea was a teacher at Old Orchard Junior High, District 68 and while there obtained her Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language “ELL”. Her passion was for helping new students from countries including: Jamaica, many Central American countries, the Ukraine, Bosnia, Mongolia and most recently Iraq and Syria. She became the director of ELL and has been involved in many activities to help students and their parents settle in Skokie. Ms. Ghetzler was the first teacher I’ve met after I moved to the US at age 11. She inspired me to become interested in history and I decided to become an educator in special education myself.

To the Ghetzler Family,

We just found out about your loss. May the many happy memories sustain you during this most difficult of times. And as time goes on may you continue to go from strength to strength.
Andrea always told it the way it was and she was such a devoted friend to my cousin Arlene; a forever friend through thick and thin!
We had the good fortunate of spending New Years Eve with her several years ago; lots of laughs and well wishes. May her memory be a blessing and continue to live on in the hearts of those who love her.

I’m really sad about the news. Andrea was my teacher at NLU last semester. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about teaching ELL students and she always brought stories about her school experiences to class. She was very energetic and you could tell that she enjoyed her work a lot. She gave me great advise and feedback about my work. I will always remember her, as I think all those foreign kids that she helped through her career will remember her. She was a person who made a difference.

I’m so sorry to hear of Mrs. Ghetzler’s passing. She was my professor at National Louis University recently. She was filled with passion when it came to talking about teaching children from other countries and understanding their struggles as they tried to learn English. She was a very thoughtful, compassionate, and knowledgable woman. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to learn from Andrea and for her to share her passion of being an ELL teacher with me.
