Obituary

Dorleau Geiser Roth (Edelstein) was born June 26, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Joseph & Helen (Tuckman) Geiser. She graduated from Emmett Elementary School, Lakeview High School and then attended Mundelein College before joining her first husband, Philip M. Roth, at various military bases in the United States where she sold war bonds during WWII. Throughout Dorleau’s life, she was committed to the values of education, women’s rights, medical research, civil rights and social justice. She first became a volunteer at the age of 15 when she joined the Dorothy Kahn Club, which eventually became the Dysfunctional Children’s Center of Michael Reese Hospital and is now the Special Kids Foundation, and she served in various leadership and executive capacities over the next 70 years. Dorleau was also active in the Illinois Speech and Hearing Foundation, the Cook County Board of Elections, Project Leap and many Chicago civic, arts and cultural institutions. After moving with her family to Miami, FL in 1959, Dorleau graduated from the University of Miami in 1966 and then moved back to Chicago where she taught 7th-8th grade Social Studies/Language Arts at Sunset Ridge School in Northfield, IL until her retirement in 1985. She was a dedicated educator and mentored hundreds of students, seeking to instill in them civic awareness, cultural diversity and belief in their capacity to make a difference. In 1987, Dorleau married Dr. Arthur S. Edelstein. After he died in 2010, Dorleau moved to the Carriage Club in Charlotte, NC where she made many new friends. Dorleau had four children with her first husband. Her first child, Janet Lee, died at five weeks old after multiple surgeries. Dorleau is survived by Henry (Lorraine) of Alexandria, VA; Robert (John Berg) of Seattle, WA and Eileen (the late Harvey) Paroff of Charlotte, NC; step-children, grandchildren, great- grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and her many, many friends, colleagues, and students.
