Dear family and friends,

Muriel was deeply passionate about the arts and music. As such, if you are interested in making a donation in her honor, here are two arts not-for-profit organizations that were important to her:

WFMT, the Chicago public classical music radio station was a source of constant joy and inspiration for her throughout her life.

2. Education Through Music
Education Through Music (ETM) partners with under-resourced schools to provide music as a core subject for all children, and utilizes music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school and self-confidence.

Muriel was always so warm, welcoming, gracious and generous to me. During my grad student years at Indiana U., I visited Chicago several times and she always put me up in the Cohen home. I remember once looking at a book case there and she said "take anything you want". Once I was reading a book at her house that I'd brought with me that was not exactly high brow. She asked me what I was reading and when I told her, her expression changed ever so slightly. I asked if she was disappointed and in her sweet voice, she replied "a little". I remember when she pursued a graduate degree in art history and how enthusiastic she was about her studies. Lorin's art work from high school adorned the walls of her home and she was intensely supportive of all his endeavors. Lorin is like a brother to me and Muriel treated me like family. I remember her as sweet, warm, nurturing and funny. May her memory be a blessing.

Heartfelt sympathy and empathy at this most difficult time. So saddened at the news. Your parents were an important part of my life - loved them so much ...
Can still hear their voices and words of wisdom.

I remember the very moment I first met Muriel. She was 18 and starting college at Roosevelt University school of music. Because her family lived in Indiana, she was moving in with with my family to attend college. She greeted me and my brother (ages 5 and 4) very affectionately in the entryway of our apartment. She was very kind to us and we were very fond of her. I remember her taking us downtown and to a movie and a play for children. She bought me the first book I ever read by myself outside of school. Rest in peace, Muriel.
