Obituary

Joan Beard, nee Becker, 74, beloved wife and best friend of Morris ("Moe") for 51 joyous years; beloved mother of Heather Beard (Scott) Grogan and Lori (Douglas) Jones; adored Grandma Joan of Erik and Madeline Jones; cherished sister of Ira (the late Betsy) Becker, Steven (the late Paula) Becker, Sherri (the late Stewart) Feldman and Stewart (the late Robin Floss) Becker; devoted daughter of the late Hyman and Mitzie (nee Sher) Becker; beloved daughter-in-law of Boris and Millie (nee Sogolow) Beard; beloved sister-in-law to Alan and Gail Beard, Arlene Dombeck, and Mitchell Spector; treasured aunt and friend of so many. Joan was an extraordinarily kind and loving woman whose mere presence made others happy. Joan and Moe were known as the perfect couple and they modeled what a beautiful loving partnership was for everyone, especially for their two children. Joan was a proud public school teacher who held a masters degree in education and taught Spanish and English As A Second Language. After she retired she volunteered by tutoring children, served as a Vice President on the Executive Board of Campaign to Save Lives, and reveled in her darling grandchildren. Special times with Aunt Joan

~Brit
~Niece,

July 6th, 2020

Aunt Joan was just the kindest, most honest, most genuine person. She made everybody laugh and had such optimism. She loved life, her friends, and mostly her family. Moe and Joan sacrificed a lot for their kids and Joan would do anything to help anyone. I remember Aunt Joan (and Uncle Moe) coming to everyone of my dance recitals, birthdays, graduations, and family events. She was so generous and never wanted anything from anyone. She would organize the BEST Chanukkah parties and host amazing family parties. Her daughters, Lori and Heather, are a testament to what a wonderful person Joan was. I always knew I could trust Joan and she always followed through with her promises. I hope to embody her energy, smile, love, and spirit! She was loved by all who knew her. Aunt Joan will forever be remembered and I will share stories with my children about us doing Richard Simmons tapes, eating her delicious kougel/ meatballs, going to Jameson’s, and countless other adventures. We love u Aunt Joan. Your memory is a treasure.

Dear Moe, Heather, Lori,
Scott, Douglas,
Ira, Steven, Sherri, Uncle Stewart, Eric, Madeline and all who loved Joan;

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Joan’s family and friends. My mom and I viewed the service and as heartbreaking as this time is, we appreciate the memories you shared.
I wish I had known her even better. I didn’t even know of some of her wonderful accomplishments, as well as her dedication to the campaign to save lives.
Joan was always nice to me and I enjoyed the few times we chatted at Uncle Stewart’s and Erica’s home.
May all the happy, funny and inspiring memories you cherish of her bring you comfort.
Most sincerely,
Denise Floss

I have such fond memories of Joan and her optimistic take on life. I remember at the U of I when we lived in Bromley Hall. She was a great role model to me in her dedication to her studies. She was truly a loving and caring person and l always felt better in her presence. Beautiful, a fabulous smile, and laughter. You ,her family and friends, were indeed, lucky people to have her in your life.

Love to you all from cousin Ethel

I have nothing but good thoughts about Joan. Always upbeat and thoughtful. If you had a conversation with Joan she would look you right in the eye and you felt like she was interested in every word you had to say. That’s a rare gift and she had it. She’s one of my favorite people and I will keep her close to my heart.

After all these years it's very difficult to mention one memory. My daughter is Lori's best friend which was very special to my girls. They loved visiting with Moe and Joan especially when Joan made her famous pound cake. After I moved to Tampa, the visiting with Moe and Joan continued especially with Lori, Doug, and kids. Andrea would come home and said "Why can't you be more like Joan". Joan was a very giving, loving lady who will be missed by so many. She cared about my family and brought her girls up to be just like she and Moe. When I grow up, I want to be just like her! RIP!!!

Dear Mo & family,
Joan & I met through Denise almost 50 years ago. She was always a joy to be with, a genuinely kind, sincere & caring person, a gentle soul. Her love of family & friends was our commonality, valuing that above all else.

Our Maj games won’t be the same without a schmeckie fech” or two.

When our granddaughter Rose was 11 yrs. old she told me that she was so frustrated with her brother she wanted to say bad words but knew she’d get into trouble. I suggested she do what my friend Joan does, find a word or phrase that won’t offend & use it whenever tempted to swear. Joan’s “ schmeckie fech” had her laughing, simmering her anger. She decided Octopus was her perfect word because 8 legs could mean 8 bad words.

I’ll miss Joan’s sweet sense of humor, her easy smile & will remember her fondly.

My heart breaks for your loss.

Moe, Heather, and Family,
I am so deeply grateful for having known Joan and befriended her beautiful daughter Heather. I first met Joan and Moe when I came to Chicago with Scott and Heather for a professional conference years ago. She welcomed me like family into their home and out to a dinner full of laughs and stories and good-natured ribbing of Scott. Her warmth, generosity, and sense of humor live on in her family. But she will be missed.

Joanie and I grew up together. Our mothers were close sisters and we continued our relationship for many years. Joan never missed a birthday, anniversary or special occasion by
sending cards and telephone calls. We often shared our childhood memories and laughed and laughed. She adored her Aunt Ruth and celebrated her 90th birthday together in Arizona.
Whatever Joan did, it was with kindness and love.
Her Arizona family will miss Joan always.
May her memory be a blessing.

Oh Joan, how I will miss you! We were friends and teaching buddies for so many years, and still, it is not long enough. My memories of the times spent with you are all happy because you brought joy to every encounter. It is so hard to believe that we will have no opportunity to make new memories. Thank you for all of the good times we shared.

 The Burritt

Our family has known and loved Joan's daughter Heather, and by extension her husband Scott, for nearly 10 years. But our fondest memory of Joan will always be a fun wintry night at Portillo's, when Heather and Scott were enjoying some fun and sun in California! Moe insisted on picking up the bill. Joan's wonderful grandchildren Erik and Maddie were focused on the chocolate cake. Lori and Doug kept us laughing too much to enjoy the beef sandwiches they insisted we order. And Joan practically floated among us all, exuding charm and grace. We quickly fell in love with her and were lucky enough to also spend time with her in Washington, D.C. and Annapolis, Maryland over the years.

There so many memories! I am Denise’s “little” sister and Roger & I got married the same summer as Joan & Moe. Joan & I stood up at Denise & Jack’s wedding two years later. We belonged to Ort and as our babies came along, in quick succession we found ourselves living just a few blocks away from each other! We experienced our first pregnancies together, Heather arrived just two weeks before Mara! Birthday parties, play dates and going out as couples filled our early years. Although Roger & I eventually moved to Florida (now Arizona), we always tried to see Joan & Moe - getting together for dinner when we came to Chicago. The last time was in September at their favorite Italian restaurant - Joan, as always being her “bubbly” self. Over the years we saw each other at weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. Of late we kept in touch on FB, keeping up with our families. Just recently (now as I am smiling through my tears), we started anew with a weekly online virtual mah jong game, kibitzing just like we did many years ago. One thing I want to share: after all these years, Joan, you were just as funny, sweet and caring as I always will remember you. Rest in peace, dearest Joan, we will never forget you!
