I did not know Marcia well but spent many hours of instruction with the irrepressible Mike Spak. In my view, Marcia was a beautiful soul and was obviously a joy to so many people. Her son, Erik’s tribute was so touching. My condolences to Mike and the family for this loss. I will be praying for all of you.

Mike and family I’m so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved wife and mother. Marsha was always such a beautiful light to the world and she cared so much for all of you. I was profoundly sorry to hear of the passing of your lifetime bride. She was a wonderfully warm and sweet friend, teacher, and partner. Without Marshall’s help, my brother-in-law, my nephew, and hundreds of others would not have become productive lawyers. She was a beautiful shining light and I know how very much you will miss her.

My mother used to sit on the floor with me and play board games and listen to music.

She would take me to galleries & museums & plays & the symphony.

She would read to me and dance with me.

We would go to parks and zoos

She would do arts & crafts projects and help with homework

When she was attending law school, I would sit with her on a couch as she studied and read the textbooks aloud. Eventually I would follow along. After a while I would read them to her when her eyes got tired. I was 8 when she graduated.

After she graduated and began tutoring for the Bar exam, she would let me help organize her course materials.

As a child I didn’t have any idea how hard she worked because she made it look easy and she always made plenty of time for me. Nothing came before us. And she made sure we knew it. Not only though words, but through her actions. There was always room for my brother & me, no matter what else was going on.

She taught me how to treat people with courtesy & respect & patience & understanding.
She taught me to not look at what a person looked like on the outside, but instead to see what they carried inside their heart. That love and compassion made one rich, not money.
It us because of her I love to read and learn.
It is because of her I try my best every day to treat people right.
It is because of her I can see the beauty and love in the world.

And it is because of all these things, that I will see her in every flower. Every smile. Every painting. I will hear her in every laugh and in every song.

And it is because of her I can appreciate the splendor of life.

It is because of her I know what heaven truly is.
It’s the thought of her.

I am so glad I told her many times how much I love her and let her know my appreciation for everything she filled my world with.

She has not left my world because she is the reason my world exists and will always be beautiful

After feeling the love flowing around me from such an amazing group of family and friends this week I now understand the beauty of a Shiva/wake/memorial . It is not to mourn, but to be lifted up and reminded of the world my mother created for us. Surrounding us with such wonderful people to remind us that we are safe, blanketed in the love and protection she has gathered for us, to sustain us in her absence.

Tonight, I will not cry myself to sleep.

Instead I will sleep safely, wrapped in the beauty and safety and love she gave me which remains and flows eternally from those she brought together.

A person is never really gone until the last touch of their presence has faded. Until nobody remembers or feels their influence on the world.

With all the lives she touched and enriched, not just family and friends, but through her benevolence thousands of people who never even knew her name , nor she theirs, her love and the impression she made will never pass from the world.

The good she spread will always be felt, and will influence and echo throughout eternity.

She will always be with us. Not only in our hearts, but in the heart of the world itself.

Dear Mike,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family . I think back fondly to attending classes with Marsha and being taught by you with what seems a lot less than 45 years ago. I also appreciate all the help Marsha gave to repeat bar takers from John Marshall the years I was teaching there.
