Obituary

Irving Suson, born June 1, 1927, age 94, passed away comfortably on February 19, 2022. He was the eldest son of his late parents, Joseph and Sedall (“Adel”) Suson, and a lifelong resident of the Chicago area. Irving had two brothers, including the late Stewart Suson and the late Morry Suson. Irving received his electrical engineering degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, and spent much of his career as an electrical engineer for a major company. An avid reader, he read everything from law books to Zoology, regularly going to book sales and buying literature of varied topics. Irving was an intellect, always on the quiet side and was known to enjoy long, detailed conversations with friends, but would always throw in a quirky joke, catching one by surprise. Irving also enjoyed watching mystery and courtroom dramas on television. In his spare time throughout his life, Irving enjoyed the art of ballroom dancing. Irving also was the proud Uncle to his late brother Morry and Sherry Suson’s five children: the late Steven Suson, David Suson, Leslie Suson, Jodi Suson, and Gary Marlon Suson. He also is survived by his grand nephews and nieces, Brittany Suson, Mitchel Suson, Brian Suson, Joshua Suson-Mrak, and Jordan Suson-Mrak. Irving was shy but never afraid to speak his mind (but always did so diplomatically)-and was somewhat reclusive, choosing to spend much of his time reading about and investing in the stock market. His ability to pick future blue-chip stocks in their most infantile stages was uncanny. Almost all of his stock choices from the 1980’s became current-day Wall Street winners, a testament to his hard work and research, which included thorough studying of the potential of blooming companies. He also loved playing scrabble with friends during the long, cold Chicago winter months and rarely lost. Irving was always ready to smile and have fun. One of Irving’s favorite jokes was his response when anyone asked him, “how do you feel?” and he would reply flatly, “with my hands.” That joke never got old, and never stopped getting laughs. Irving loved to eat, and loved home cooking. Thanksgiving was a favorite, and he would amaze everyone with his endurance for eating. No one could out-eat him, despite his small frame, as he would go back for seconds and thirds, and often would be the last one left at the dining room table, still eating! His former late sister-in-law, Sherry Suson, often joked that Irving was her #1 customer. Irving’s final days were spent reading, watching movies, and having many long talks and visits with his niece Leslie Suson and his nephew Gary Marlon Suson. Irving turned out to be quite an enthusiastic model and participant in photo shoots, as Gary was able to use his expert photography skills to take beautiful photos of Irving in the last year of his life, which captured his kind eyes, joyful essence, sincere smile, and gentle soul. Irving loved learning and asking a multitude of questions, digging deeper and deeper into his conversations. He was truly interested in how other people were doing; as one example, he never failed in any conversation to ask Gary and Leslie, “tell me how you are,” or “tell me what’s new with you.” Irving was an enthusiastic conversationalist, able to phrase, structure, and communicate his thoughts in the most eloquent manner, using his command of the English language to keep his listeners intrigued by what he had to say. You could talk with Irving for hours and never get bored. Irving never complained about whatever he was going through. He was a favorite of the staff at Glenview Terrace Nursing Home, who always commented how sweet he was and what a beautiful smile he had. Irving will be laid to rest at Shalom Memorial Park in Arlington Heights, Illinois on February 22, 2022, alongside his Mother Sedall (“Adel”) Suson, his brother Stewart Suson, his nephew Steven Suson, and his former sister-in-law, Sherry Suson. Irving was a truly delightful, charming, and uniquely special man; he will be sorely missed by all who knew him and he will be remembered with love.
