Obituary

Leslie Breitner Solomon, age 75, loving mother of two, adoring grandma to four, and faithful wife passed away in her home in the early hours of June 19th after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Leslie was born in 1946 in New York, the oldest of four children. After graduating from college in Brockport, she moved to California where she met her husband. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Chicago, got married in 1970, and settled in the suburbs. As a wife and mother, Leslie was loving, generous, selfless, and kind. If she wasn't reading a book or grading papers with a cat on her lap, she was scratching her husband or daughters' backs with her perfectly manicured nails while animatedly talking to a friend or loved-one on the phone. She had a slight obsession with dessert, more specifically chocolate, and it was rare for her to turn down ice cream, even in the dead of a Chicago winter. Leslie was an outstanding and respected schoolteacher, as many of her students will endearingly attest. She commanded the classroom with ease, her students cherished their time with her, and the scope of their learning went far beyond the required curriculum. She is survived by her husband Art of 51 years; two daughters Amy (Erik) Hulting and Tracy (Michael) Bumpus; four grandkids: Luke, Josh, Ava, and Leah; and three siblings Michael Breitner, Penny Dutton, and Jill Breitner and her beloved cat, Rusty. When we were teachers at Thomas Jefferson, I was fortunate to have a classroom next door to Leslie. We became good friends both at school and outside of school. I will miss her beautiful smile!
