Dorothy P. Kayle

Dorothy P. Kayle, age 102 died on December 1, 2023 in Glenview, IL. Beloved wife and best friend of the late Milton P. Kayle for 68 wonderful years; loving mother of Jennifer (Jeff) Posner and Hilary (Dr. Peter) Crist; cherished “Honey” of Emily (Josh) Sobel, Risa (Andy Smerczak-Zorza) Posner and Scott (Ali) Posner, much loved great grandma of Maz, Zoe, Morgan, James, Dylan and Owen. Dorothy and her husband grew up in Utica, New York where she was known for her acting and public speaking at Utica Free Academy High School. She attended the University of Michigan and then transferred to Syracuse University to be near her dear Milton, who graduated from Hamilton College. Thanks to her husband’s position as White House Special Assistant to President Harry S. Truman, her two daughters were born in Silver Spring, Md. In 1953 the family moved to New York where her husband embarked on a legal career and they made their home in New Rochelle, NY. They summered in Old Forge, NY in the Adirondacks, where her father, H. Samuel Slater, built a waterfront home and where they were members of the Thendara Golf Course as well as supporters of View, earlier called the Old Forge Art Center. Dorothy was an avid gardener, bowler (she bowled in three different leagues) and she and her husband played duplicate bridge. She was also a volunteer at New Rochelle hospital for 20 years, starting as an escort for incoming patients and after a few years doing several other jobs, worked the reception desk. In addition, she was a founding member of the Marcia Weinstein Chapter for Lupus Erythematosus, which was the first organization in the country to raise funds for research and spread awareness about a disease that was little known at the time. The chapter received calls from all over the country and helped all the new Lupus foundations with information about raising money for continuing research so that a cure could be found for the disease. In her later years, Dorothy took up watercolor painting, where she found she had natural artistic abilities. She also enjoyed knitting and needlepoint. She and her husband travelled the world, with trips to the Caribbean, Europe and Japan and also throughout the United States. When her husband became a Trustee at the Truman Library, they took many trips to Independence, MO. They also shared a love of music, (especially Frank Sinatra) theatre and lectures, and were regular attendees to Broadway musicals and plays, Carnegie Hall concerts, and to presentations at the 92nd Street Y and the Harvard Club of New York.
